Scottie Scheffler has clinched the Players Championship title at TPC Sawgrass with a resounding five-shot victory. With a three-under 69, he finished 17 under for the tournament, holing five consecutive birdies midway through his round to pull away from the field.
Tyrrell Hatton of England finished second with 12 under, birdieing his final five holes in a 65. Viktor Hovland’s 68 lifted him to joint third with Tom Hoge on 10 under.
Scheffler will be at the top of the rankings, demoting Jon Rahm, who pulled out of the tournament due to illness. He will become only the third player to hold the Players and Masters titles simultaneously, following in the footsteps of Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.
Scheffler will also earn a record $4.5 million from the $25 million (£21 million) purse at the event.
Despite Min Woo Lee of Australia wiping out Scheffler’s two-shot lead by the third hole, Scheffler remained patient and stayed in the game. Lee’s triple-bogey seven on the fourth derailed his challenge, and he eventually signed for a 76 to finish eight under par.
The final threat to Scheffler’s victory appeared to come from Hideki Matsuyama of Japan and Hatton, who enjoyed a barnstorming finish. Matsuyama reached 12 under after 13 holes, but his challenge stalled with a double bogey on the 14th, eventually finishing nine under.
Hatton, on the other hand, was level par for his first nine holes but then birdied the 10th, 12th, and every hole from the 14th, setting a clubhouse target of 12 under with his final nine holes in a tournament record-equalling 29.
Scheffler chipped in for a birdie on the par-three eighth just as Hatton was finishing up. This sparked Scheffler’s run of five successive birdies, which took him into a six-shot lead with six holes remaining.
“It’s just relief and tiredness. The final stretch is tough, especially with how windy it was getting. The shots on 17 were challenging, and I made a great par on 18,” Scheffler said after his win.
With Scheffler’s commanding victory, he has proven to be a force to reckon with in the world of golf, and his success is well deserved.
