Tony Finau put on an impressive performance at the Mexico Open, winning the tournament by a comfortable margin of three shots ahead of runner-up Jon Rahm.
Last year, Finau had finished joint-second behind the Spanish golfer but made sure to go one better this time around. He sealed his victory with a stunning five-under 66 final round, finishing on an overall score of 24-under.
Going into the final round, Finau had a two-shot lead over both Rahm and Akshay Bhatia. But the American golfer showed no signs of pressure as he fired five birdies in a bogey-free round to take home the trophy.
“It feels amazing. I knew I would have my hands full. ‘Rahmbo’ is on top of the world right now. It’s crazy how this game is – you never feel you have a tournament won until it’s over,” said the 33-year-old Finau, who now has six PGA Tour wins to his name.
Finau’s recent form has been impressive, having claimed four victories from his past 18 events. With this win, he has now climbed up from 16th to 11th in the world rankings.
Masters champion and world number one Rahm, who broke the course record with a round of 61 on Saturday, could not replicate his performance in the final round. His hopes of catching Finau ended with a bogey at the 17th hole.
Brandon Wu finished two shots back in third place, while 21-year-old Bhatia secured fourth place on 18-under.
Finau’s victory at the Mexico Open is a testament to his skill and consistency as a golfer. With such an impressive win under his belt, he will undoubtedly be a force to be reckoned with in the coming months on the PGA Tour. We would also need to watch out for Rahm, who continues to dominating this season.
