Woods gets PGA board appointment as player director

    August 2, 2023

In a bid to grant golfers a stronger voice in major decisions, Tiger Woods has been appointed as a player director on the PGA Tour’s Policy Board. This decision comes in the wake of the Tour’s merger with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and the DP World Tour in June, a development that left players blindsided.

Woods, a 15-time major winner and an esteemed figure in the world of golf, will now join Rory McIlroy and four others as the sixth player director. The objective is to provide the players with a more influential role in shaping the future of the sport.

“I am honoured to represent the players of the PGA Tour,” expressed Woods, acknowledging the significance of the moment. He reassured that the players are committed to ensuring that any changes made in Tour operations will serve the best interests of all stakeholders, including fans, sponsors, and fellow players.

The Tour further reported that 41 players, including McIlroy, Schauffele, Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Shane Lowry, and Matt Fitzpatrick, have expressed support for the proposed board changes, indicating a unified stance among players in their pursuit of a more active role in decision-making.

To bolster the players’ influence, Woods and his fellow player directors will collaborate with Tour commissioner Jay Monahan to effect changes to the board’s governing documents. Their aim is to establish a framework where the tour cannot make major decisions without involving the player directors. With such an arrangement in place, players would no longer be blindsided whenever big decisions take place.

The lack of transparency in the negotiation of the recent merger led to players feeling a sense of “betrayal,” with Monahan facing calls to resign. According to Xander Schauffele, many players had lost trust in Monahan following the event.

“I am committed to taking the necessary steps to restore any lost trust or confidence that occurred as a result of the surprise announcement of our Framework Agreement,” said Monahan, acknowledging the need to address players’ concerns.

“My job in the negotiations – in partnership with our player directors, PAC (Player Advisory Council), and the broader membership – is to advocate for what is best for the PGA Tour members today and in the future,” Monahan emphasized, recognizing the players’ crucial role in shaping the Tour’s direction.

Woods’ addition to the board further enhances the players’ authority, offering them full transparency and the ability to approve or decline potential changes to the Tour as part of the Framework Agreement discussions.
