Connor McGregor is about the start of the decade right with his first fixture to hold on the 18th of January, against Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in Las Vegas. This would be his first fight since losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov in October 2018.
McGregor, who announced his retirement in March last year, made a surprise comeback in November after most people thought the pro was truly done. He holds a fighting record of 21-4. However, success has not been his lately as his last win was in UFC 205, 2016, in his fight against Eddie Alvarez. Since then, he did not fight again till his match with Nurmagomedov. Despite that, he has continued to be the face of MMA, and no one can doubt what stuff the Irishman is made of.
Donald Cerrone is also a force to be reckoned with. With a career record of 31-13, he has been described as “one of the most accomplished” fighters in the MMA world. He has been very active in the octagon, having fought four times in 2019 alone.
The 36-year-old holds UFC records for most finishes at 16. Although he, like McGregor, has been suffering lately as he lost his last two fixtures, one against Tony Ferguson in June and the other against Justin Gaethje in September. But that has not diminished the fact that the Cowboy is a pushover. If anything, he is to be feared now because he would be fighting now to restore his glory.
The two fighters seem evenly matched. McGregor’s coach, John Kavanagh, has insisted that his fighter is fit for the match. This is as a result of speculations concerning if McGregor would be fit enough, having not fought for more than a year. Kavanagh has expressed that McGregor is indeed fit, having trained so hard and that the team has moved the training to Las Vegas in preparation for the match.
Cerrone would be fighting at 155 pounds with McGregor weighing 170 pounds, the welterweight limit. As explained by UFC President, Dana White, this is because the Irishman wishes to compete at least three times this year. Cerrone would be fighting at 155 pounds.
Conor McGregor is priced at 1.30, while Donald Cerrone is pegged at 3.20 to win the bout.
