Andy Murray parts ways with long term coach to hire German coach Jan de Witt ahead of the Mubadala Championships

    December 16, 2021

Former World No. 1 Andy Murray recently spoke about his future as he hired a new coach ahead of the 2022 season. Murray parted ways with long time coach Jamie Delgado and has appointed the experienced German coach Jan de Witt as his new coach for a trial period.

De Witt has earlier coached the likes of Gael Monfils, Giles Simon and Nikoloz Basilashvili and will be Murray’s coach at the Mubadala Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi.

During an international with the reporters in Abu Dhabi, the Scotsman shared how he does not know how long he will play the sport hence he wants to hire the right person for the job.

“This decision is an important one for me because obviously, I don’t know how much longer I’m going to be playing so I want to make sure the person that’s with me for the last period of my career is the right one. That’s why I’m going about it this way,” Murray said.

The Scottish tennis star had a fantastic 2016 season where he won 8 ATP Singles titles more than Novak Djokovic, who bagged seven ATP Singles. During the 2016 season, he won his second Wimbledon title and also reached the Number 1 ranking.

However, injuries and waning form saw him decline. Murray took long break and his chronic hip injury saw him at the sidelines for long periods of time. He has just won two ATP titles in the last five years. However, the veteran is determined to finish his career strongly.

A three time Grand Slam winner, Murray won his last ATP title at the 2019 European Open. He did not play much tennis as he was recouping from his knee injury. Murray played 17 tournaments this season but did not make the semifinals in any of those tournaments. However, there has been a gradual improvement in his health and fitness.

He will feature in the Mubadala Tennis Championship in the coming days. Murray will face compatriot Daniel Evans in the first round of the tournament. It will also be his first event under the tutelage of the new coach Jan de Witt. Murray has won the Mubadala Championships twice in his career. Murray was at first scheduled to play Austrian star Dominic Thiem in the first round. But the Austrian withdrew from the tournament due to a wrist injury.
