Bernard Tomic is all set to make a strong comeback, believes that he can break into the top 10

    December 14, 2021

Australian tennis star Bernard Tomic has recently revealed his lofty plans of a comeback. The 29-year-old feels that he can break into the top 10 in a couple of years or more. He revealed that he has only used 60% of his effort to reach his highest ranking of 17.

Tomic, who is currently ranked 259th in the ATP rankings has won only nine matches out of 21 games this year. Out of that most were in ATP qualifying or at Challenger tour level. Tomic reached his peak ranking of 17 in January 2016 but he believes that he can turn the clock and break into the top 10.

Since 2017 Tomic has seen a massive decline and lost a lot of places at the end of the year. In a recent interview with Courier Mail, Tomic highlighted his lack of application in recent years. However, he insisted that he is determined to make a strong comeback.

“I wasn’t really mentally there,” Tomic said. “As opposed to now I’ve realized: knuckle down, do the right thing, stay healthy and give tennis one more shot – the right way. One of my goals is to finish off right. And retire happy. So we’ll see.”

The Australian tennis player highlighted that a lot of older players have seen a lot of success on tour and he feels that if he puts in the hard yards, he can also achieve the same. “Guys are aged 40, 38, and in the top 50, top 100, top 30,” Tomic continued.

“I don’t want to play pro tennis until I’m 38. It’s not something I strive for. I’m good at it, but I don’t see myself playing then. At least the next half-decade I do. That’s why I better have one more good crack at it, turn it around, do the right thing then retire happy.”

Tomic revealed how his ultimate goal is to break into the top 10 in the ATP rankings. He wants to finish his career strongly as he achieved his career-best ranking by exerting way below his maximum effort. The Australian also highlighted how he misses being a top professional player and is looking to turn his career around. He will probably try to qualify for the next year’s Australian Open. The 29-year-old came through qualifications only to be knocked out by Dennis Shapovalov in the second round of this year’s Australian Open.
