Boris Becker believes that winning the Wimbledon this year won’t be a cakewalk for Novak Djokovic

    July 6, 2021

German tennis legend Boris Becker believes that despite being an overwhelming favourite to win the Wimbledon, it won’t be a cakewalk for Novak Djokovic. He feels that other players can challenge the Serb to the title. Becker feels that there is a chance that Djokovic may fizzle out under pressure.

Djokovic is on the verge of creating history as he is fighting to win his 20th Grand Slam. A win at Wimbledon this year will draw him level to  Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal’s tally of Grand Slams. It will also bring him close to the elusive Calendar Golden Grand Slam.

While fans may consider Djokovic the favourite to win the Wimbledon this year, Beck feels it may not be that easy for the Serb. The three time Wimbledon champion wrote in the Daily Mail that the 34-year-old will face some stern tests from his competitors.

“Novak WON’T walk it,” Becker said. “Some of the men left in the draw are being underestimated, and Novak Djokovic has another opponent that should not be discounted — history. The nearer he (Novak Djokovic) gets to the final and a possible 20th Grand Slam title, the more this pressure will build and the more he will be reminded of it.”

.The German legend asserted that Djokovic won’t be overconfident of a Wimbledon win. “Djokovic will not be viewing this title as a certainty, I can assure you, and nobody else should either,” Becker added.

Becker feels that the media and the fans give too much attention to players like Roger Federer and Andy Murray. He feels that the young and rising talents do not get enough attention despite their excellent performances at the Majors.

“I also think we are still so preoccupied with legends like Roger Federer and Andy Murray that we sometimes overlook some of the other men, who in the coming years are going to be Grand Slam champions,” Boris Becker said.

He also pointed out how Matteo Berrettini and Alexander Zverev can reach the finals. Both the youngsters have big serves and solid groundstrokes and can come up with a surprise against Roger Federer.

“It would not be a great surprise to me if the men’s finalist from the bottom of the draw comes from the winner of a likely quarterfinal between Matteo Berrettini and Alex Zverev,” added the German. “The Italian and the German have so much natural power, and they are a real force on grass. I don’t think Federer would relish playing either of them.”
