Canadian sensation Leylah Fernandez focused on having fun on court rather than taking added pressure

Canadian tennis youngster Leylah Fernandez scripted yet another outstanding win as she defeated Angelique Kerber in the fourth round clash. Earlier the 19-year-old defeated Naomi Osaka in the third round in a nail-biting third round encounter.

At the post-match press conference, Leylah Fernandez sounded very confident in her abilities. She claimed that she always had the match in the bag and it was a matter of moments. The Canadian believes in her abilities and is not surprises by her results against Osaka and Kerber.

“I expected that one day my tennis game is going to come through and that I’m going to be on the big stage in front of a big crowd playing against big players and also getting the wins,” Fernandez said.

“I’m not surprised by anything that’s happening right now,” she added. “I’m just glad that it’s happening now and not later in the year, but we are just going to enjoy this time and take this one day at a time.”

The youngster has shown tremendous heart and fighting spirit to keep calm and composed in such big matches. She revealed how she was not taking any pressure and was trying to enjoy every moment.

“The match was incredible. I was playing well in the first set. Unfortunately, I did a few mistakes,” Fernandez said. “Her, as a great player, great champion, she noticed and she took advantage of it. In the third, I was just enjoying every moment of it.”

The Canadian who has been a star of this edition’s US Open admitted that she does not take much pressure and keeps a positive frame of mind. The 19-year-old felt that it helps him overcome tough situations. She once again admitted that her primary aim always remains to have fun on the court.

“Having fun on the court, I think that’s the key to anybody’s success, especially mine,” Fernandez said. “If I’m not happy or I’m putting too much pressure on myself, I start making mistakes and I’m not enjoying myself.”

“But these past few weeks I have been enjoying myself a lot on the tennis court, and that’s been a mindset of mine from the very beginning that not only my dad but also my mom has been telling me to do so that I can enjoy this life,” she added.

Leylah Fernandez will be now up against 5th seed Elina Svitolina in her debut Grand Slam quarterfinals. Svitolina is also in great shape as she defeated Simona Halep in the last round and will be again a tough competitor for the Canadian.
