Clay court is tougher for me – Daniil Medvedev

    April 5, 2023

Daniil Medvedev has admitted that playing on clay court is tougher for him. The Russian is well known for his potent game on hard courts but he struggles a lot on clay courts. The 27-year-old from Moscow defeated Jannik Sinner in the final in straight sets to win Miami Open.

This was Medvedev’s fourth hard-court title of 2023, his fifth ATP 1000 Masters title, and his 19th tour-level title, out of which 18 have come on hard courts. Medvedev said he will need to be at his best if he has to savor success in the upcoming clay court season.

In fact, Medvedev has a terrible record of 18-23 (win-loss) while playing on clay with a win percentage of 43.9%. Furthermore, he is yet to win any title while playing on clay.

Medvedev said in the post-match press conference after Miami Open final, “Talking about clay, again, I know that I can play well on clay. I beat Novak once on clay. I actually beat Tsitsipas and Novak at the same tournament once, wow. That’s pretty good achievement on clay,” Daniil Medvedev said.

“But on hard courts like here, I feel like many of the matches I didn’t play my best tennis, but I managed to win them and the tournament. Clay court is tougher for me. If I don’t play my best tennis, I can lose much easier. Hopefully, I can be at my best on clay court season,” he added.

There is no doubt that Medvedev will have to bring his best in the upcoming clay court season. The Russian has been in good form and it will be interesting to note how quickly he could make the adjustments in his game from hard courts to clay courts.

The Clay Court season starts with Monte Carlos Masters, which begins on 8th April.
