It has not been a great year for Austrian Tennis star Dominic Thiem who was injured and had to miss out on most of the action this season. His coach, Nicolas Massu however feels that in the next few years he will be at the best stage of the Austrian’s life.
The Austrian is currently nursing an injury which he suffered on his wrist during the event in Mallorca and hence he did not qualify for the Wimbledon earlier this year. Thiem also pulled out of the Cincinnati Open and there are several doubts that if Austrian will play in the US Open.
Massu spoke at length in his interview with Pontus Break regarding the GOAT Debacle, Thiem’s comeback and several other things etc.
“Each has their own story, all three have achieved incredible things and different records,” Massu said. “I put them on the same level. That they continue to win at this age helps us others to understand what the path is, to understand that we still have to do to reach them. They make the level of tennis better every year, we are living in a spectacular generation, they are the three greatest in history.”
Coming to the so-called ‘New Generation’, Thiem is the only tennis player who has bagged a Grand Slam when he won last year’s US Open. Just because Thiem’s US Open win was in the absence of players like3 Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, it is not valued the same way!
I have always said, I prefer that they are always in the tournaments that Dominic wins, because that will mean that he is at a great level,” Massu said. “When he is well I know that he can beat anyone, he is still young but he already has a lot of experience. I am confident that the next 5-6 years can be the best. It is from difficult moments that one becomes strong.”
The Chilean then went on to reveal how Thiem cannot rush here and he is being taken care of by doctors. The Austrian must follow the rules suggested by the doctors to get back to the court pretty soon.
“He (Dominic Thiem) continues to advance with his recovery, every day we are in contact and also with the doctors,” Massu said. “He was unlucky, he was playing well in Mallorca, motivated, we saw him happy on the court … but sometimes things happen that you don’t expect.”
“Now he has to go very calmly, respecting the deadlines, the wrist is an area that has to be perfect to return to competition, whenever it is, but do it 100% and without the risk of becoming chronic,” Massu added. “There are still several weeks to know when exactly he will be able to return.”
Thiem will be adamant to try and feature in the US Open to defend his crown later this year.
