Daniil Medvedev credits his big serve to be the difference after his win at the Cincinnati Masters

    August 20, 2021

Daniil Medvedev is in fiery form heading into the US Open. Once again he was too good for Bulgarian tennis star Grigor Dimitrov. The Russian has now progressed to the quarterfinals at the Cincinnati Masters.

After his dominating win, Medvedev came to the press conference and spoke about several different things. Starting from the match against Dimitrov to the presence of fans in the stands.

He started off the conference speaking on the game where he defeated Dimitrov 6-3 6-3 and has progressed to the quarterfinals. The Russian admits that it was a very challenging game despite the scoreline saying otherwise.

“Was pretty hot today, so I think it was tough for both of us,” Medvedev said. “A few moments in the match I felt like, not that I don’t have a lot of fuel left, because you always have a lot, but it was really tough, and that’s the moment I actually saw Grigor suffering, also struggling. That’s how it is. It’s the same for everybody.”

Medvedev created the difference in the game with his exceptional serves. The Russian tennis star registered seven aces which allowed him to stay fresh for all those returns. He admitted that it was his serve that made the difference between the two players.

“Since we had so many long rallies, I think the biggest difference today was the serve, where I was able to get more easy points on my serve. Yeah, just make my life easier with this,” Medvedev said. “I think I probably won a little bit more points when it was over nine shots, or usually they have these statistics, I think I would be on top of this, and that’s what made the biggest difference today in the match.”

Medvedev is a big name and fans are very excited to see him in action from the court. But speaking on easing up the restrictions for the fans to fill up the stands, Medvedev was not totally clear with his stance.

He highlighted how unrestricted filled stands may again be the reason for rising cases troubling everyone including the people, organizers and even the players on tour.

“It’s cool that the crowd is back,” Medvedev said. “Of course actually also what we need to see is the number of cases, especially between us tennis players. If, for example, there is going to be tournament where there is 100% capacity and then the positive cases go up, then there is going to be question.”

He was quick to clarify that despite his fears he would love the people back on the stands.

“With the crowd, it’s much more fun, yeah, nothing else to add, actually,” he said.
