Djokovic Wins Dubai Open as Nadal Wins in Mexico

    March 2, 2020

World number one, Novak Djokovic has won the Dubai Open after beating Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 6-4, making it his second title of the year, after winning the Australian Open in January.

It would be his 6th straight title so far. He has also won 21 games in a row. Djokovic, who had not won the event since 2013, has had a very interesting time at the tournament, displaying coordination and calmness all through. He had taken a break after winning in Melbourne and it seems it provided the desired result. Since the event started, he showed fine skill and did not lose a set until he faced Gael Monfils in the semi-finals. But he was quick to recover and win the match.

Saturday’s match with Tsitsipas proved to be a tough one as the 21-year old Greek was determined to secure another title after recently winning the Marseille Open. That was why he was quick to draw 3-3 with Djokovic in the first set. But he was not without his mistakes and this allowed Djokovic to win the first set. The second set proved tougher, but Djokovic, who has more experience, was able to push things to his favour.

Speaking after the match, he described it as “a big win for me”, recalling how he almost lost things on Friday, after losing a set.

In Acapulco, Mexico, Rafael Nadal claimed his third Mexican Open title after defeating Taylor Fritz 6-3 6-2. He played the whole tournament without losing any set. He first won the title in 2005, making it one of his earliest biggest career wins, and he acknowledged that fact after the game. While he won the first two titles on a clay court, he won his third on a hard court.

His opponent, American Taylor Fritz, although lost, can be happy about doing good for himself. He is the second American to ever reach the final of the Mexican Open and also reached his first final at an ATP 500 event.

Speaking after the match, he described Nadal as “one of the best players to ever play the game”.
