Tennis star and Swiss legend Roger Federer is still very optimistic, although undecided, about competing in the next edition of the Olympics holding in Tokyo in 2020.
He stated, “I’m very excited about the prospect of maybe playing the Olympic Games, but I’m not quite sure yet.”
Federer, who lost out of the US Open, and failed to secure his 21st grand slam, hopes to take part in the event and maybe secure the one award he has chased on for many years – a gold medal in the singles event.
For now, the star has mapped out his mode of operation from now until Wimbledon 2020. Coincidentally, the event is so close to the Olympics. Federer failed to appear in the 2016 Rio Olympics due to a knee injury. As far as medals go, he holds a gold medal after playing alongside Stan Wawrinka in Olympics men doubles in Beijing.
There is nothing quite as going down or retiring with fulfillment at having gained everything you wanted, so it is understandable why Federer, at 38, is still contemplating a shot at the Olympics.
Currently holding the position of the most grand slams for men, a gold medal at the Olympics would be more like an icing on the cake, or not. Federer has always taken the Olympics event seriously, having started appearing as far back as 2000. So it’s understandable why he sees a gold medal in the event as such a big deal.
He still has to put in a lot of things into perspective before competing in the event. According to him, “I’ll just have to see how my family is doing, how my body is doing, and then if everything is green and I really feel it’s the right thing to do, I’ll play it, otherwise I’ll skip it but it would definitely be a nice challenge, I admit.”
Indeed to play for gold at the Olympics is not a small feat, and so one has to make sure they are in the right shape both physically and otherwise.
At the moment, Federer has his eyes set on the Laver Cup and is currently in Geneva. In coming months, we would get to know whether to look out for him in Tokyo 2020.
