Olympic Gold medallist and retired Australian tennis star Todd Woodbridge has claimed Novak Djokovic to be invincible ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. He feels that there is not anyone who can stop the Serb from clinching the Gold medal at the Summer Games.
Woodbridge touched upon a lot of aspects as he spoke to Matt Tropolle of AusOpen.com. He highlighted how a Gold medal for Djokovic will mean that he will be a step closer to the elusive Calendar Golden Slam. The Australian feels that the Serb will put the GOAT debate to rest by clinching the rare feat.
The 34-year-old has won all three Grand Slam this season and will look to win the Gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, followed by the US Open that is scheduled to happen later this year.
“Djokovic sees it as an opportunity to really cement himself as the greatest of all time by potentially winning a ‘Golden Slam,'” Woodbridge said. “I would have thought his absolute goal was to win the Grand Slam first, because he’s been to an Olympics and he has a medal … and that would definitely set him apart from anybody and any other achievement in the men’s game.”
The Australian who won Gold at the 1996 Atlanta Games in the men’s doubles event feels that Djokovic is a little too ambitious. But he also agrees that if someone can break records then it is the 20time Grand Slam winner. He admits that none of the players in the Tokyo draw can pull off an upset against the World No. 1.
“To try to do the five (events), I think is very ambitious. But if there’s anyone who can do that, then it is Djok,” continued Woodbridge. “He is by far the favourite – it’s about how he recovers mentally and physically from Wimbledon.”
“Given the way he’s trained and the way his routines are, he’ll do that well. I don’t foresee anybody really beating him (Novak Djokovic) at this particular point.”
Novak Djokovic will start his Tokyo Olympics campaign against Hugo Dellien of Bolivia in the Men’s Singles first-round clash. The Serb will look to get going right from the first game.
