Former Swedish tennis expert Mats Wilander feels that Emma Raducanu should grow at her own pace

    December 6, 2021

Former Swedish tennis player Mats Wilander feels that English youngster Emma Raducanu does not need a great coach to reach great heights. The young tennis star who won the historic US Open ended her association with coach Andrew Richardson.

Raducanu highlighted how she needed a more experienced coach than Richardson.  She recently appointed historic coach Torben Beltz as his new coach. Beltz was with Angelique Kerber and now his association with Raducanu will only help her in her career.

Wilander recently analysed her situation, “I’m not saying Torben Beltz is not a good coach, he drove Angelique Kerber for a long time and helped her win Grand Slams.”

However the Swedish tennis expert added that Kerber was a mature player when she was with Beltz. That may not be the case for Raducanu, who is a breath of fresh air and is still in her teenage.

“The fact is that Kerber knew what he had to do to get there. My feeling is that it is not necessary to take seasoned coaches when you are 18 year-old and you are fresh, flat of life. We have to let these guys grow before we can step in and shape them,” Wilander added.

Wilander feels that there is always a risk of hindering player development in such cases and fears that a talent like Raducanu should not be restricted.

The 57-year-old tennis star feels that young players need to grow at their own pace and they cannot be restricted to various voices in her life. “Young people have to grow at their own pace, and in Emma Raducanu’s case I don’t think it’s a good thing that there are various voices over her head,” Wilander added.

Lastly, Wilander added how he feels that Raducanu must only hear her own voice at the moment. He feels that the 18-year-old Brit must have fun while playing the sport. “The only voice she has to hear is hers, ” Wilander added. “You know how to win a Grand Slam. She has already done it. She has to have fun, that she allows her to do what she likes on and off the pitch. And she has to develop at her pace, without someone else forcing her.”
