Former British tennis star, Greg Rusedski feels that pretty soon Andy Murray will reach the second week in Grand Slams. He also backed the former World No. 1 to have success at the Majors if his body can hold up for the long term. The Brit has highlighted the importance of fitness in many of his conversations. and feels that staying healthy is the biggest question for Murray.
The Scotsman is trying his level best to make a strong comeback after his long injury layoff. Overall it is not easy to play after getting your hip replaced and Murray has done that with aplomb for which he deserves a lot of credit.
However his 2021 season was not consistent enough, he missed the Australian Open due to a positive COVID-19 report. He then suffered a groin injury which kept him out of action for three months. Before he suffered a quadricep injury and failed to take part in the Tokyo Olympics.
In a recent interview with Express Sport, Rusedski highlighted the two hard-fought wins of Murray since coming back from injury this season. He used these wins to point out his belief in the Scotsman to perform a lot better in the upcoming Majors.
“He’s beaten [Jannik] Sinner, he’s beaten [Hubert] Hurkacz, two top ten wins to end the season off,” Rusedski said. “So if he can manage his body, that’s the biggest question mark because it’s been a four-year project, and I hope he finds a way. And if he can stay healthy for a long period of time, there’s no reason why he can’t play well, get to second weeks of Majors.”
Rusedski then went on to detail how hard Murray’s career has been over the years since his hip injury back in 2017 to his comeback. The 34-year-old has fought tooth and nail to keep playing the game that he loves.
“But it all comes down to, does his body allow him to do so,? Rusedski continued. “Because the older we get, unfortunately, we’re not like a fine body of red wine, we don’t get better with age, unfortunately. And he’s had a lot of surgeries, but he has put in one heck of an effort to try and put himself into a position to play some great tennis again.”
Lastly, Rusedski stated that Murray was rather unlucky this season as he suffered too many injuries throughout in 2021. He feels that it is always about Murray’s body and fitness that may hinder his chances at success at Majors than his mentality.
