Roger Federer suffered a three-set loss against Pablo Andujar in the Gonet Geneva Open on Tuesday. He revealed after the match that while he felt good to be back on the court, he was pretty disappointed with the result.
“It’s good to be back on the court, but then you lost a match like this and you’re down. It never feels great. I was looking forward to playing here, no doubt about it,” Federer said.
“But this is a press conference where I have to explain how I feel about losing, which is never the greatest way of trying to explain why and how it all happened. But of course there were moments where I was really happy to entertain the crowd and [I was] looking at the long road that I’ve been on from the comeback.
“Sure, it’s rewarding to be back on a tennis court. But I expect better from myself. I feel like in practice I’ve been playing better, even in practice here. But then again as we know, matches are a different animal. I’ve got my work cut out there,” he added.
Federer, however, showed his class as he left the Parc des Eaux-Vives court with a smile and a little wave to the small crowd in attendance.
The Swiss star did look quite frustrated during the Press Conference but it wasn’t any particular mistake that made him feel so. The 39-year-old said that he searched for some answers after returning to the court but he just couldn’t find them in his tennis.
Federer list a 4-2 lead in the third set and that put an end to his 32-match winning streak at home.
This is only the second tournament for Federer since the 2020 Australian Open after which he underwent two arthroscopic right knee surgeries. The Swiss Star lost in the Doha quarter-finals in March. Federer admitted, though, that he didn’t expect himself to be in top form this season.
