British number one Johanna Konta says she will continue to improve at Wimbledon as she advanced into the last 16 after beating American Sloane Stephens.
The 28-year-old is the only British survivor in the women’s singles after Harriet Dart was knocked out by Ashleigh Barty on Saturday afternoon. Konta dropped serve to hand Stephens the first set, and she appeared to be hanging on for parts of the second.
However, she fought back and raced into a lead of 3-0 in the decider before clinching a 3-6 6-4 6-1 victory. Her reward will now be a clash with two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova but she claims her game is in a good place ahead of Monday’s meeting.
“The more opportunities I get to be in the latter stages of Grand Slams, the more experience I gain,” she said. “Experience can only bring good things.
It can only help with managing different things, different situations that come up at this point of the tournament. “I’m really pleased that I’ve been able to make it to the second week in two successive Grand Slams. I’ve never been able to do that before.
I’m really pleased with that achievement.” Konta is the 2.50 outsider to win on Monday afternoon, while Kvitova remains the 1.53 favourite.
Barty is also in action and she will face Alison Riske in the second week of the tournament. The Australian, who won her first Grand Slam in
Paris last month, is the 3.50 favourite to get her hands on the Wimbledon trophy this month.
