Muguruza Not Sure Of US Open Appearance

    August 19, 2020

World number 16, Garbine Muguruza has expressed her doubt over participating in this year’s US Open due to an ankle problem. The said problem forced her to pull out of the Western and Southern Open which was to take place this week in New York.

The decision to withdraw was recommended by her medical team. She took to Twitter with a statement saying, “Following the recommendation of my medical team, I have decided to withdraw from the Western and Southern Open due to discomfort in my left ankle. I really want to get back on Tour, and do it in New York. I know that the WTA and USTA are making a great effort to make it possible for us to play and I will work hard so that I can be there in a few days.”

The 26-year old reached the final of the Australian Open back in January, her highest feat in that tournament. She has also taken part in several editions of the US Open but has never progressed past the fourth round. But she is no stranger to titles as she has won both the French and Wimbledon Grand Slams and 5 other titles since turning pro in 2012.

The US Open is set to begin on August 31 and it already looks like it is not going to be the same this year. Already, 6 top 10 ranked WTA players have withdrawn from the event including Bianca Andrescu, who won the event last year, and top-ranked Ashleigh Barty. Their decision to withdraw may be linked to fears for the virus.

The men’s side is also faced with the same uncertainty as some players have opted out of the event already. This is despite the safety measures introduced by the USTA to ensure the safety of everyone involved in the event. One person who was in quarantine for the Western and Southern Open has tested positive for the coronavirus, although the person is not a player.
