Seeing the strongest player in history being out of the top 20 at the end of the year is not good for tennis – Flavio Cobolli on Novak Djokovic

    July 18, 2022

Novak Djokovic recently won his 21st Grand slam title after defeating Australia’s Nick Kyrgios in the final of Wimbledon 2022. Despite the win, Djokovic had to drop four places in the ATP Rankings and he is currently in number seven position.

The winner of any major is awarded 2000 rating points but there were no points credited to Djokovic’s tally after the Wimbledon triumph as Russian and Belarusian players were banned from the Championship.

With clouds looming large on Djokovic’s participation in the US Open as he hasn’t received his vaccination shot against Covid-19, there could be a chance that he could drop out of the top 20 at the end of the year. Djokovic had earlier revealed he was ready to miss major tournaments if he was forced to get vaccinated.

Italy’s young Tennis sensation Flavio Cobolli reckons it will not be good for the Tennis world if Djokovic is knocked out of the top 20 as he is the strongest player in the history of the game. A foreign traveler has to produce vaccination proof in order to enter the US.

“I’m not sure, but I believe that seeing the strongest player in history being out of the top 20 at the end of the year is not good for tennis and will certainly weigh on us all. In my opinion, it is right to let him play in America because it is also thanks to him that the tournaments are even more beautiful,” Cobolli said while talking to OA Sport.

Meanwhile, Djokovic was deported from Australia earlier in the year after he was given a medical exemption. It was a bit humiliating for the Serbian and he recently revealed he wouldn’t travel to a country in which he isn’t permitted.

“The Australian saga for me was of course not pleasant at all. But what most people probably still think that I forced my way to Australia and tried to come in with no papers, permissions or exemptions is not true. This was proven in the court case. I would never go to a country where I don’t have permission to travel,” Djokovic explained.
