Stefanos Tsitsipas to miss Davis Cup tie due to foot injury, says father

    September 20, 2021

Young Tennis sensation Stefanos Tsitsipas will miss Greece’s Davis Cup tie against Lithuania, his father confirmed on Sunday. In fact, Apostolos, Stefanos’ father also revealed that Tsitsipas was playing with an injury during the US Open. Tsitsipas’ father informed that the foot injury was troubling his son throughout the US Open.

The 23-year old was stunned in the Third Round of the US Open by youngster Carlos Alcaraz in the thrilling five-set encounter.

“This injury was present throughout the US tour, at the US Open, in Toronto, in Cincinnati, and at the Olympics,” Apostolos Tsitsipas said. “Specialized measures were taken to deal with this problem, but it was considered necessary to rest (after the US Open) for two weeks. Stefanos came here with the belief that he will play, of course.”

Tsitsipas father added that the player is recovering well and he also had a hit for half an hour.

“Stefanos has been recovering all this time,” Apostolos said. “Today he hit the field for half an hour, he tried things. He knows his body very well and I think he will make the decision, to say that he is ready to do what he needs to do the next two days.”

Meanwhile, Stefanos Tsitsipas was heavily criticized by the Tennis world after he took a lengthy toilet break in the first-round match against former US Open champion Andy Murray. Tsitsipas went on to win that game but Murray said he lost all rest for the Greek player. In fact, it is expected that the ATP will change the toilet break rule for the next season after the controversy.

Furthermore, Tsitsipas had also taken a long break in the semifinal of the Cincinnati Open against Alexander Zverev, which hadn’t pleased his opponent.

The 23-year old will look to recuperate from his foot injury and make a solid comeback. Tsitsipas has qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals, which will be played between November 14-21 in Turin.
