Novak Djokovic won his sixth Wimbledon title after beating Matteo Berrettini in the finals. With the Wimbledon win, he took his total Grand Slam tally to 20, equalling the tally of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. It was a grand moment in Men’s tennis as history was made by the Serb. Hence L’Equipe invited a well-renowned coach Brad Gilbert to speak about Djokovic’s dominance in Men’s tennis in the last decade.
One must also note that the Serb has won eight of the 12 Grand Slams and is hungry for more. Speaking in this context, Gilbert wrote in his column on how Djokovic can end up with around five or seven more Majors before calling it a day.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if, over the next three seasons, that is, the next 12-13 Grand Slam tournaments, Novak were to win between five and seven more. So why not around 27 titles at the end of the day,” Brad Gilbert wrote.
The tennis coach who has trained Andy Murray and Andre Agassi also mentioned Djokovic’s eagerness to get better than what he was the previous day. It is something that makes him the sensation that he is at the moment. Gilbert also believes that he is at the peak of his powers when his physical peak must have been a decade ago.
“In fact, he continues to evolve; every match, every opponent, teaches him something,” Gilbert added. “At 34, he is stronger than at 24!”
Gilbert also pointed out how Djokovic has worked hard to improve his serve. It has only gone better with every event. He also feels that the Serb’s continued success is due to his ability to move at an exceptional speed and open-minded mentality.
“I find he has made incredible progress in serving,” Gilbert said. “And then he always moves as well and I also find him more open-minded in his approach to the Majors.”
The 34-year-old currently has a chance to win the Golden Grand Slam if he wins the US Open later this year. However, before that, his eyes will be fixed on the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
