Dominik Szoboszlai to miss Euro 2020

    June 2, 2021

RB Leipzig’s midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai will not be taking part in this summer’s European Championship after failing to recover from an injury. The attacking midfielder suffered an injury for his club earlier this year and hasn’t been able to take part in any professional football game since then.

While Leipzig missed his services in their title challenge for the Bundesliga, his national side will miss him even more. Hungary are placed in the group of death, which includes the of Germany, France and Portugal. It would have required a mammoth effort from a fully fit Hungarian side to go through, but it’ll be even harder without their star man.

Just like certain other players across Europe, Szoboszlai will be taking the time off to recuperate and be fully fit for the start of next season’s league campaign. He was a star for Redbull Salzburg, but hasn’t kicked a ball for the Redbull group’s German counterparts.

He was acquired by RB Leipzig for a fee of 20 million, which made him the most expensive Hungarian footballer in history. At just 20, he has enough time to justify that price tag but Hungary would have loved him to be available for the tournament.

In his 12 matches for Hungary, he has already scored 3 goals. One of those goals came last November against Iceland which sealed his nation’s place in the Euro 2020.

Although Szoboszlai suffered a lengthy period out on the sidelines, he returned to training last month. He could have gambled and played for his country this summer but thought it would be a better decision in the long run if he gave some time for his muscle injury to completely recover.

His management, RB Leipzig and national team coach Marco Rossi were all involved in the final decision which broke out on Tuesday. Hungary will start their campaign on June 15th against current champions Portugal.

The tournament will not get any easier for them as they face record champions Germany and tournament favourites France later in the tournament.
