Germany wingback Robin Gosens who was a star in Die Mannschaft’s 4-2 win over Portugal at the Euros has credited Atalanta head coach Gian Piero Gasperini for all his success.
The 26-year-old wingback’s early goal got ruled out due to offside. However, he managed to notch up a goal for him from a header and also assisted Kai Havertz for another goal. He was adjudged the ‘Man of the match’ for his tireless efforts on the left channel.
Gosen approached the Euros after completing his most prolific season with Atalanta where he scored 11 times in the Serie A from wing-back position. He credits his growth as a goalscorer to the Atalanta manager.
“You have to thank Mister Gasperini,” he told reporters. “He had a great influence on it and these qualities that seem to have slumbered in me a bit were tickled out of me with the game system in Bergamo.
“I’ve been there for four years now and have internalised the system. I’m someone who likes to take part in the offensive game and I also have the dynamism and the time to score a goal like today.”
The former Heracles wingback’s top performances may land him a big contract at a top European club. However, when asked about the same, Gosen was very particular about deciding his future only after the tournament.
“I don’t know. The Bergamo sports director has already written to me and expressed his congratulations,” he said. “I think they are just happy for me now and proud that I played a good game at a European Championship.
“It certainly happens that you end up on the screen of other teams through such an achievement, but we’ll take a look at it after the Euros. Now the focus is fully on the tournament, we want to get as far as possible.”
Gosens will look to continue his great form for Germany in their next match against Hungary. Die Mannschaft have only three points at the moment and they need a win to go through in their last match. Germany currently sit in the second position in Group F, only a point behind leaders France.
