Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni reckons the upcoming FIFA World Cup could be Messi’s last chance to win the coveted trophy. Messi has a glittering cabinet but the FIFA World Cup trophy is still missing from it.
The Argentine number 10 has had a glorious career so far but he is yet to hold the World Cup trophy in his hand. Messi came close in the 2014 World Cup when La Albiceleste lost to Germany 1-0 in the final of the marquee event.
In fact, Messi has already revealed that the upcoming World Cup in Qatar will be the last of his career. The talisman has been in prolific form for PSG Saint Germain as he has scored 12 goals and 14 assists in 18 games across competitions. Thus, he will look to continue the same in the upcoming event.
Scaloni told TNT Sports in an interview (h/t Mundo Albiceleste): “Messi has made a lot of people happy, not just Argentines. It could be his last. It could be… Hopefully, it’s not… I believe that he is happy on a pitch and he has made a lot of people happy.”12 goals and 14 assists in 18 games across competitions.
“If we call him like he is supposed to be called, there can possibly be more games of his. Because the world of football asks for it and that’s obvious.”
In fact, EA Sports 23 simulation has predicted that Argentina will win the World Cup.
Meanwhile, Messi and co. will begin their FIFA World Cup campaign against Saudi Arabia on November 22. Subsequently, they will take on Mexico and Poland in Group C of the tournament.
Argentina last won the FIFA World Cup back in 1986 and it will be interesting to note if they would be able to go all the way in the quadrennial event.
