Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted that a Liverpool title win is highly impossible even though the team has a slight chance of becoming champions after coming from behind to beat Southampton at the St Mary’s Stadium on Tuesday evening.
League leaders Manchester City were only able to avoid a defeat on Sunday when they faced West Ham at the London stadium. Jarrod Bowen scored a first-half double that almost completely blew the title race open again, but Pep Guardiola’s side pulled back and could have won it if Riyadh Mahrez had scored a late spot-kick.
However, failure to do that meant that Liverpool can pull a point behind if they won the Saints. It didn’t come that easy on Tuesday evening as The Saints led first through Nathan Redmond’s strike in the 13th minute. Takumi Minamino equalized in the 27th minute of the first half.
Cameroonian defender Joel Matip scored the winner in the 67th minute as Liverpool held on for a 2-1 win at the Saint Mary’s Stadium.
Liverpool now has 89 points from 27 games which puts them one point behind Manchester City, who has 90 from 37 games.
This means that the league title will be decided on the final day of the season, with Manchester City welcoming Aston Villa to Etihad Stadium while Liverpool will face Wolves at Anfield stadium.
Liverpool will only finish as the champions of England if Aston Villa gets a point or beats Manchester City at home on the final day, while Liverpool must beat Wolves to take advantage of such a result.
However, Jurgen Klopp believes that that scenario is possible but insists that the Reds must do their part.
“Of course, it is unlikely because City plays at home against Aston Villa, who plays only on Thursday. It will be tough against Burnley. They fight for survival. If someone wants us to be champion, then we have to win first, and Aston Villa needs to get a point at City. It is possible, not likely but possible.” Klopp said.
