The 2022 World Cup in Qatar is easily one of the most controversial in history. From its inception, the tournament has been highly criticized for various reasons.
Qatar’s hosting rights were awarded after a vote-buying scandal involving several high-ranking FIFA officials. There have been concerns about the country’s human rights record and labor laws relating to migrant workers building the stadiums and other infrastructure needed to host a successful World Cup.
Also, questions have been raised about whether it is appropriate for an Islamic country to host such a significant international event with its cultural implications around alcohol consumption and public displays of affection.
But the World Cup is going smoothly, and their numbers show good results.
FIFA revealed a report with the most important figures of the World Cup at the end of the group stage.
2.45 million people have registered who have attended the stadiums of Qatar 2022 in this group stage. In this way, they surpassed the attendance figure for Russia in 2018 during this same number of matches. In addition, more than a million people have attended the official FIFA Fan Fest in Doha to enjoy the games.
The match of the second day in the group stage between Argentina and Mexico stood out for being the one with the most presence in the stands, not only so far in this tournament, but in recent years. 88,966 attendees attended the Lusail Stadium, the highest number for a World Cup in the last 28 years.
Regarding television audience, the match between the United States and England was the most-watched men’s soccer match in the entire history of the USA, reaching an audience of 19 million viewers on FOX.
Usually, history is made during a tournament that brings together the elite of world football, and it seems that Qatar will not be the exception.
