The 28-year-old continued his fine form in the Welsh Open with a dramatic comeback to win Ronnie O’Sullivan in Cardiff on Saturday.
The game began with O’Sullivan making a positive start and took the first frame on the final black. Wilson had also missed his opportunity to pounce when he had the chance, and O’Sullivan increased his advantage with a clean 97-30 win in the second frame.
After the interval, Wilson and O’Sullivan exchanged frames. Then O’Sullivan was having a two-point lead, and then the tables began to turn the way of Kyren Wilson.
Wilson started an impressive and dramatic comeback with a century in the seventh to make it 4-3.
He equalized the game with a fine break of 163. However, Wilson couldn’t maintain his growing momentum. O’Sullivan scored another point make it 5-4 and just was within a frame of reaching the Welsh Open final.
Nonetheless, it was world number 8, Kyren Wilson, who won in the penultimate frame to take the game to a decider. The Warrior finished up with a 68-0 victory and progress to the final.
Ronnie O’Sullivan spoke after the match. He said that he didn’t feel in control and missed too many balls. However, he had no complaints and acknowledged the fact that he had done well to get as far as he did.
It could be remembered that Wilson lifted his first ranking title at the 2015 Shanghai Masters when he was ranked 54th in the world. In that tournament, he defeated Judd Trump 10–9 in the final. Now he will be looking to win his first-ever Welsh Open.
Kyren Wilson will now come up against either Shaun Murphy or Bingtao Yan on Sunday in the final.
