The World no.1 Ash Barty scripted history as she became the first Australian woman in 44 years to win a home slam. Barty defeated America’s Danielle Collins by 6-3, 7-6 in the final of the Australian Open at the iconic Rod Laver Arena on Saturday.
The Australian came up with her best against the American as she won her third Grand slam title. Barty saved a break point on her serve in the fifth game of the opening set and then was able to break her opponent’s serve to take the first set by 6-3.
The second set went into the tiebreaker but the Australian kept her calm take it by 7-2 and created history.
Barty was delighted with her performance and said it was a dream come true for her. In fact, Barty didn’t even drop a single set on her way to glory. World no.1 gave her gratitude to the fans, who supported her right throughout the tournament.
Speaking at the trophy presentation ceremony, Barty said: “I am a little stumped. “I would love to thank everyone who does so much work behind the scenes – it takes a real big village to put on an event like this, this tournament has been one of my favorite experiences, so thank you so much for that.
“As an Aussie, the most important part of this is being able to share it and you guys have been nothing short of exceptional.
“This crowd is one of the most fun I have ever played in front of – you relaxed me and forced me to play my best tennis! Against a champion like Danielle, I had to bring that today.
“This is a dream come true to me and I am so proud to be an Aussie, so thank you so much everyone – we will see you next time!”
Barty has been a force to reckon with in the recent past and she will look to continue the good show in the upcoming events.
